Palakkad: A fitness centre in Kerala has triggered a public debate after promoting itself as an Islam friendly gym, bringing attention to the need for inclusive and faith sensitive spaces within everyday services.
The controversy began when a gym in Puthunagaram released a promotional video outlining its new model. Owner Nawaz Muthu said the facility would operate without loud music and would provide separate timings, spaces, and trainers for men and women. He described the initiative as an attempt to align fitness routines with Islamic principles.
The announcement quickly drew criticism online, with many questioning whether the gym was meant only for Muslims. Some users raised concerns about religious division in public services, while others questioned the use of the term Islam friendly.
Following the backlash, Nawaz removed the original video and issued a clarification. He said the gym is open to people of all faiths and is not restricted to any particular community. He explained that the concept refers to operational practices such as gender separation and the absence of loud music, which make the space comfortable for those who follow certain religious guidelines.
Nawaz said many individuals, especially women, avoid gyms due to mixed environments and music. He noted that some members of his own family had stayed away from fitness centres for similar reasons. He said the aim is to create an environment where such individuals feel comfortable to participate in physical activity.
The response to the clarification has remained mixed. Some social media users supported the idea, stating that separate spaces could encourage more women to join gyms. Others said providing options based on comfort and belief is a practical approach in a diverse society.
At the same time, criticism has continued from those who see the model as unnecessary or divisive. Questions have been raised about whether services should be described in religious terms.
For many in the Muslim community, the debate highlights a long standing concern around accessing everyday services without compromising personal values. The gym owner said his intention remains to provide a space where people can pursue fitness without discomfort, while keeping the facility open to all.
