“Islam Zindabad” Banner Sparks Controversy in Indore

Indore: A simple banner with the words “Islam Zindabad” in a Muslim-majority area of the city has triggered sharp reactions from Hindu right-wing groups. The incident raises disturbing questions about the growing normalization of Islamophobia in India, where even an affirmation of faith is branded as provocative.

The banner was placed at Jinsi Chauraha in Indore. Within hours, members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal objected and alerted the police. Local leaders described the slogan as an attempt to “disturb peace” and claimed it was linked to extremism. The police promptly removed the banner following their complaint.

It is a matter of concern that a common expression such as “Islam Zindabad” (Long Live Islam) is not seen as a expression of identity and pride, rather it is framed as a call for unrest. Community leaders are asking why their peaceful assertion of faith is being policed, while aggressive slogans from Hindu groups in public spaces rarely face similar action.

This episode highlights a troubling double standard. The routine vilification of Muslim practices, symbols, and expressions feeds a larger atmosphere of fear and intimidation. When law enforcement acts swiftly on such complaints without balancing community rights, it deepens the sense of marginalization.

The central question remains: if saying “Islam Zindabad” is treated as a threat, where is the country heading? Critics warn that normalizing such reactions risks pushing India into a situation where Muslim identity itself is viewed as suspicious.
