Islamic Seminary Issues Fatwa to Combat Environmental Degradation

Lucknow, June 3: In a notable initiative aimed at addressing environmental concerns, the Islamic Centre of India (ICI) has issued a fatwa urging Muslims to refrain from cutting trees and burning crops. This advisory comes in response to a query from Mohammad Tarique Khan amid rising temperatures and growing environmental challenges.

Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, the Chairperson of ICI, emphasized the religious obligation of Muslims to protect greenery, conserve water, and minimize wastage, as outlined in the Quran. He highlighted that it is a significant sin in Islam to burn trees and crops, even during wartime, and stressed the importance of planting saplings and preserving natural resources.

“In Islam, it is forbidden to burn trees and crops. It is a great sin. Even during the war, trees, gardens, and fields should not be burnt or damaged,” Maulana Khalid Rasheed stated in a video message. He further urged the community to actively work towards saving ponds, canals, rivers, and seas from pollution, underscoring that those who plant saplings benefiting all living creatures are rewarded by the Almighty.

The fatwa, described as a rare ‘green’ gesture, aims to mobilize the Muslim community towards sustainable practices and contribute to global efforts in curbing environmental degradation. This advisory highlights the integration of religious teachings with modern environmental ethics, encouraging a collective effort to address climate change.
