Nadia, West Bengal — A disturbing and Islamophobic poster surfaced on the entrance notice board of the Faculty of Agriculture at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), sparking anger and concern among the campus community, reported the Maktoob Media.
The handwritten poster, discovered on the university’s premises in Nadia, read: “Dogs and Muslims not allowed. All eyes on Pahalgam. Terrorism means Islam.” The offensive message bore no signature and was promptly removed after being spotted. Independent news platform Maktoob confirmed the poster’s authenticity and shared a photograph of it.
BCKV, known as one of India’s top agricultural institutions, has been left shaken by the incident. Neither any individual nor group has claimed responsibility, and university officials have yet to release an official statement.
The appearance of the poster comes in the wake of heightened Islamophobic sentiment across the country following a recent militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead — including tourists, two foreign nationals, and one local youth. The Resistance Front (TRF), a militant group operating in Kashmir, has claimed responsibility for the attack. The Indian government has accused Pakistan of supporting the group, further intensifying diplomatic tensions.
The phrase “All eyes on Pahalgam” appears to be an attempt to capitalize on national grief and channel it into religious hatred. Many observers see it as part of a growing pattern of communal polarization, where acts of terrorism are increasingly being used to vilify Muslim communities in India.
Several students and faculty members at BCKV have expressed strong condemnation and called for swift action. “It’s extremely distressing and unacceptable,” said one senior professor. “BCKV has always upheld academic integrity and inclusiveness. Such hate should never find space here.”
Student unions have urged the administration to investigate the matter thoroughly and ensure that the campus remains a safe and inclusive space for all.
