Israel Calls for Sanctions on Iran Amid Rising Tensions

15 April 2024

Israel has urged the United Nations Security Council to impose new sanctions on Iran and condemn Iran for its support of terrorism, according to Israel’s UN envoy, Gilad Erdan.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called for caution, expressing concerns about a potential escalation following Iran’s recent attacks on Israel. Guterres emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East to prevent a catastrophic conflict.

In response to accusations and warnings, Iran’s UN envoy, Amir Saeid Iravani, defended Iran’s actions as acts of self-defense, claiming that Iran is not seeking further conflict but will respond to any threats or aggression.

Additionally, Iran’s mission to the United Nations cautioned the United States to stay out of the conflict between Iran and Israel, indicating that the recent events should be considered resolved unless Israel provokes another incident, which would elicit a more severe response from Iran.

The recent Iranian attack on Israeli territory, reportedly in retaliation for an airstrike in Syria attributed to Israel, represents a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations.
