Israeli airstrikes continued to hit Lebanon on Sunday, with warplanes targeting Beirut’s southern suburbs despite an ongoing ceasefire, as the death toll from Israel’s military campaign in the country has surpassed 3,550 people, with more than 10,800 others injured since early March.
The latest attack struck two residential apartments in separate buildings in the Hawta al-Ghadir area of the Dahiyeh district, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). Several people were reported injured in the strike. Residents reported hearing powerful explosions as Israeli fighter jets bombed the area without issuing prior warnings. Thick smoke was seen rising from the targeted neighbourhood, a densely populated part of the Lebanese capital.
The strike marked the first Israeli attack on Beirut since a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was extended on June 3 following US-mediated negotiations in Washington.
The renewed bombardment comes amid growing concerns over the humanitarian impact of the conflict. Since a Hezbollah cross-border attack in early March, Israel has carried out extensive airstrikes across Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of more than 3,550 people and injuries to over 10,800 others, according to Lebanese figures.
The continued attacks have raised questions about the effectiveness of ceasefire efforts and increased fears of a wider escalation, particularly after Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich earlier called for military action against Beirut’s southern suburbs. With casualties continuing to mount and strikes now reaching the Lebanese capital once again, the latest attack underscores the fragility of the ceasefire and the ongoing human cost of the conflict.
