Chennai: The Indian Union Muslim League has announced its plan to contest five seats in alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. IUML National President Kader Mohideen made the statement after the party’s Executive Committee meeting in Royapuram.
Mohideen said the IUML will seek five constituencies as part of the DMK led alliance. He also urged the DMK to allocate tickets to 16 Muslim candidates across the state. He said fair representation is essential in the upcoming election.
The Executive Committee meeting passed more than ten resolutions. One key resolution called for working toward the victory of the DMK led alliance and supporting the continuation of the Dravidian Model government. Mohideen praised Chief Minister M K Stalin and said the government follows the path of leaders such as Anna and Kalaignar.
The political climate in Tamil Nadu is intensifying ahead of the polls. The 234 member Assembly will go to elections in the first half of 2026. In the 2021 elections, the DMK won 133 seats and led the Secular Progressive Alliance to power. The AIADMK secured 66 seats.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami criticised the state government over its Interim Budget. He described the Dravidian Model as deceptive and accused the government of failing to deliver substance.
As parties prepare for the election, seat sharing and candidate selection remain central issues. The IUML’s demand highlights the question of Muslim political representation within major alliances in the state.
