Jailed Politician Abdul Rashid Defeats Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Baramulla

5 June 2024: In a surprising turn of events, Abdul Rashid, currently imprisoned on terror funding charges, has triumphed over former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla Parliamentary constituency. Rashid’s victory signals widespread dissatisfaction among Kashmiris with both state and central governments.

Rashid, the first Indian mainstream political leader arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, managed his campaign from Tihar Jail. His sons, Abrar and Asrar Rashid, spearheaded his campaign, holding rallies and public meetings on his behalf.

Abrar Rashid expressed confidence in their campaign’s success, noting the overwhelming public support despite the challenges posed by his father’s incarceration. “His arrest made the election campaign difficult. Initially, I thought I was alone, but the people joined me without any greed, showing their support,” Abrar told PTI.

The election outcome has sent a strong message to the political establishment in both Jammu and Kashmir and at the national level. The electorate’s choice reflects a desire for change and a departure from the status quo. Despite Rashid’s legal troubles, his win underscores the complexities of Kashmiri politics and the electorate’s willingness to support candidates who resonate with their grievances and aspirations.

While Baramulla witnessed Rashid’s remarkable victory, the National Conference (NC) secured wins in crucial constituencies such as Srinagar and Anantnag. These results highlight the diverse political sentiments across the region, with some areas still favoring established parties like the NC, while others support alternative candidates like Rashid.

Rashid’s win, despite his controversial background, illustrates the deep-rooted issues influencing voter behavior in Kashmir. This election is expected to prompt significant introspection and potential recalibration among political parties at both the state and central levels.
