Jaipur: The demolition of Noorani Mosque in Jaipur as part of a road-widening project has sparked protests from Muslim organisations and community leaders, who argue that authorities acted while the matter remained under legal consideration.
The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) carried out the demolition along the Malviya Nagar-Jagatpura 80-foot road corridor, where officials removed structures they said obstructed the planned expansion. Noorani Mosque was among the structures demolished. Authorities stated that two temples, a shrine and a satsang hall were also removed during the operation.
Muslim organisations and members of the mosque committee have strongly objected to the action. They maintain that the mosque possessed valid documents and that a dispute concerning the property was pending before the Waqf Tribunal.
According to committee representatives, a hearing was scheduled in the near future. They contend that authorities should have awaited the outcome of legal proceedings before demolishing the mosque.
The demolition has generated anger among several Muslim groups in Jaipur. Community leaders have announced plans for protests and public demonstrations. As part of the campaign, worshippers have been urged to wear black armbands during Friday prayers.
Leaders of the organisations stated that they intend to pursue their objections through peaceful and democratic means. They warned that the protest movement could expand if concerns remain unaddressed.
The Jaipur Development Authority defended its decision, stating that the road-widening project aims to improve traffic flow and public safety in a rapidly growing area. Officials said encroachments had reduced sections of the planned 80-foot road to around 25 feet, creating congestion and safety concerns.
JDA officials rejected allegations of discrimination and stressed that structures belonging to different faiths were affected. They stated that notices had been issued and that the operation followed legal procedures and court directions.
The dispute has drawn attention across Jaipur and intensified debate over balancing urban development with the protection of religious institutions. As protests gather momentum, community leaders continue to seek dialogue and legal clarity regarding the demolition.
