Jamia Millia Expels Six Students, Issues Notices to 20 Others Over April Campus Violence

In a significant disciplinary action, Jamia Millia Islamia University has expelled six students and barred them from reapplying for any course for up to three years, citing their involvement in violent incidents that took place on campus on April 25. The university has also issued show-cause notices to 20 other students, accusing them of conspiring to disrupt peace and normal functioning, reported the Indian Express.
According to university authorities, the violence erupted near Gate No. 8, close to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Kaushal Kendra, initially starting as a student altercation. However, it allegedly escalated with the involvement of outsiders, with individuals wielding lathis, stones, and makeshift weapons.
The expelled students hail from various departments, including Engineering, Social Sciences, and Yoga Studies. Their expulsions, ranging from one to three years, come with orders to vacate hostels and surrender university IDs within a week. The administration has also declared the campus “out of bounds” for them.
The university described the incident as a “criminal conspiracy” that disrupted academic activities, including lab exams and library services. It claimed that the mob used abusive language, assaulted guards and staff, pelted stones and bricks, and broke open a rear gate to flee when police arrived.
Officials said the violence had tarnished the university’s image, especially due to media coverage and the alleged involvement of external elements. Damages were reported to key university facilities, including the central library, and many students and visitors were left traumatised.
