Jamia Millia Islamia Climbs 42 Places in Global Sustainability Rankings, Deepens Ties with German University

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has moved up 42 places in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, reaching 334th position globally. The university stood at 376th in 2025. It now ranks 13th among Indian institutions and 192nd across Asia, according to Saima Saeed, the university’s Chief Public Relations Officer.

The UI GreenMetric rankings, launched by Universitas Indonesia, evaluate universities on environmental protection, sustainable infrastructure and campus development. The 2026 edition featured institutions from across the world.

JMI Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif congratulated the university’s faculty, students, researchers, staff and alumni, crediting their collective efforts for the improved standing. He said the recognition reflected the university’s continued focus on academic standards, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.

In a related development, a delegation from Germany’s University of Applied Sciences Erfurt visited JMI’s Department of Civil Engineering under an academic exchange programme. The delegation, comprising faculty member Christian Stangenberger and seven students, arrived on September 19 under an exchange arrangement covered by a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions.

Department head Professor Quamrul Hassan, along with faculty members and students, welcomed the visitors. During discussions, officials noted that the partnership between the two universities had been active for nearly 20 years, supporting exchanges involving students and faculty.

Both sides discussed renewing the agreement and expanding cooperation in joint research and other academic areas.

Welcoming the German delegation, Asif highlighted the longstanding intellectual and cultural links between India and Germany. He referred to contributions of German scholars including Max Müller and Immanuel Kant, and to Germany’s engagement with the works of Omar Khayyam. He also noted that three of JMI’s founders, including a former Vice-Chancellor, had pursued higher education in Germany during the 1920s.

Asif said the partnership with the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt was central to JMI’s plans to strengthen academic collaboration with Germany. He added that the university was exploring the establishment of a Centre for German Studies covering the language, history, culture, art and cinema of Germany.
