New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia concluded a three-day National CRE Workshop titled ‘Healing Childhood Trauma: Strength-Based Approaches and Rehabilitation Practices’ on September 18. The Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, JMI, organised the event in collaboration with the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, the Department of Teacher Training and Non-Formal Education, the Faculty of Education, and the Indian Association of Health, Research, and Welfare, which holds CRE status from the Rehabilitation Council of India.

The valedictory session brought together academicians and professionals to reflect on learning and insights generated during the workshop. Prof. Jessey Abraham, Professor and former Head and Dean of the Faculty of Education at JMI, served as Chief Guest and delivered the valedictory address. Prof. Tanuja, Dean of Academic Affairs and Officiating Director of CSSI at JMI, was the Guest of Honour and delivered the concluding address. Prof. Bharti Sharma, Honorary Director of the Centre for Jawaharlal Nehru Studies, delivered the welcome address.

The workshop opened on September 15 with an inaugural session in which Prof. Bharti Sharma of the Department of TT and NFE, IASE, JMI, highlighted the importance of strengthening professional understanding of childhood trauma and rehabilitation practices. Prof. Farah Javed Farooqui from the same department followed with an address emphasising the need for greater awareness around childhood trauma, also reflecting on the legacy and vision of the institute.

The keynote address came from Prof. Zubair Meenai, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor in the Department of Social Work at JMI. He outlined how childhood trauma manifests in physical and psychological health concerns and stressed its potential intergenerational effects. Prof. Meenai identified parents, caregivers, family members, clinicians, schools, and psychologists as key actors in recognising trauma and building coordinated responses. He underlined that genuine healing requires strengthening the relationship between trauma survivors and the systems and people involved in their care.

The workshop reflects JMI’s ongoing commitment to addressing mental health and rehabilitation through education and professional development.
