New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia faces allegations of arbitrariness after cancelling the PhD admission of a UGC NET qualified Muslim research scholar without issuing any written order or notice. The scholar has moved the Delhi High Court, alleging violation of natural justice and constitutional safeguards linked to minority institutions.
The dispute relates to PhD admissions for the 2025 to 26 academic session at the Anwar Jamal Kidwai Mass Communication Research Centre. According to the petition, the student secured selection under the UGC NET Exempt Category. His name appeared in the final selection list released on December 19, 2025. The department verified his academic documents, approved his research proposal, and allotted a supervisor.
The student stated that despite completing all formalities, the university stopped his enrolment through oral communication alone. No written cancellation order followed. No notice was served. No personal hearing took place.
In his plea, the scholar said the action denied basic administrative fairness. He questioned how an admission cleared at every stage ended without any official explanation. The petition also raised concerns over Jamia’s handling of Muslim minority reservation in PhD admissions. It alleged lack of clarity and improper implementation of reservation norms despite the university’s minority status.
Education law experts noted that cancellation after final selection and supervisor allotment raises serious legal issues. They said academic decisions affecting careers require written orders and due process.
The case has intensified concerns among research scholars. Students linked the episode to wider complaints of administrative high handedness on campus. University officials, including the centre director, registrar, and media coordinator, did not respond to queries.
The Delhi High Court is expected to take up the matter soon. The student seeks restoration of his admission and accountability within higher education institutions.
