New Delhi: Responding to ongoing campaigns targeting Muslim religious sites, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind(M) has announced plans to launch a nationwide movement to protect mosques and Waqf properties. This decision was made during the National Working Committee meeting chaired by Jamiat President Maulana Mahmood Madani.
The meeting addressed pressing issues, including rising communal tensions in the country and continuous targeting of mosques and shrines. Serious concerns were raised about Places of Worship Act, 1991 and Waqf Amendment Bill, highlighting the need for immediate action.
Prominent leaders, including Mufti Abul Qasim Nomani, Rector of Darul Uloom Deoband, and Working Committee members, participated in the meeting. They presented regional reports and outlined challenges faced in protecting Muslim religious and community sites.
In his presidential address, Maulana Mahmood Madani expressed deep concern over increasing communal polarisation, warning that it threatens social harmony and coexistence. He criticised the biased media narratives that fuel discord and emphasised the importance of a well-structured strategy to protect constitutional rights.
“We must address misconceptions and present logical, evidence-based responses to promote mutual understanding,” he said.
Maulana Madani also called for unity within the Muslim community, urging efforts to strengthen inter-community relations.
The Committee voiced serious concern over incidents like targeting of mosques and shrines in Sambhal and similar actions across the country. It urged the government to take a firm stance in court to prevent such occurrences and resolved to defend the Places of Worship Act rigorously.
Efforts to counter the Waqf Amendment Bill were also reviewed, with directives issued to state units to intensify campaigns for the protection of mosques and Waqf properties.
The Committee resolved to organise a national conference in February 2025 on “Composite Nationalism,” focusing on the historical contributions of the Muslim community to India’s progress and harmony. The event will highlight shared values and a collective heritage that unites the nation.
The Committee also decided to convene a workshop with education experts to explore strategies for promoting girl education, underlining its importance in community upliftment and empowerment.
