New Delhi: A delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind(M) was detained upon arrival at the Lucknow airport on Saturday evening. The delegation was en route to Bahraich to extend support and aid to the victims of recent communal riots in the region. The riots broke out during a religious procession in Maharajganj, and Mahsi towns of Bahraich on October 13.
The delegation led by the Jamiat General Secretary Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi wanted to meet the affected persons and assess the situation for the relief work.
The Jamiat leadership expressed deep concern over this action by the police authorities and questioned the reason behind obstructing representatives who are going to assist those in need. It demanded that the delegation be released immediately and allowed to proceed with their humanitarian mission.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh police cracked down on communal violence in Maharajganj as it held 26 more suspected rioters, taking the total number of arrests to 87, according to officials. However local Muslims alleged that the police are making selective arrests, which is causing concern for the Muslim community in the area.
They further alleged that despite Muslim neighbourhoods having been the target of numerous arson, vandalism, and provocation acts, no action has been taken against the real miscreants.
