Patna: Veteran screenwriter and lyricist Javed Akhtar criticised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over an incident involving a Muslim woman doctor during a public function in Patna. The incident occurred while appointment letters were being distributed. A video from the event spread widely on social media and triggered strong public reaction.
According to the video, the Chief Minister noticed a burqa clad woman standing before him. He questioned her appearance and pulled down her veil in full public view, exposing her face. The act took place from a raised platform and unfolded before officials and attendees. The clip drew criticism across social platforms.
Javed Akhtar responded through a public post. He stated his long held opposition to the traditional concept of parda. He added his position gave no ground to accept the Chief Minister’s action toward a Muslim woman doctor. He described the act as unacceptable and said respect for personal dignity remains essential.
Akhtar demanded an unconditional apology from Nitish Kumar to the woman concerned. He stressed public authority carries responsibility toward citizens, especially women from minority communities. His remarks gained wide attention due to his known secular views and cultural influence.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti also reacted. She said she felt shocked after watching the video. She noted her past admiration for Nitish Kumar and expressed distress over his conduct toward a young Muslim woman.
The incident reignited debate around personal freedom, dignity, and treatment of Muslim women in public spaces. Many observers viewed the act as a violation of consent and decorum. The continued silence from the state leadership added to public unease.
