JD(U) Drops Muslim Representation in First Bihar Poll List

Patna: The Janata Dal (United) has released its first list of 57 candidates for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, featuring 30 new faces and no Muslim representation. The list, unveiled under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, highlights a shift in the party’s candidate strategy and social composition.

The JD(U), contesting as part of the National Democratic Alliance, has focused on upper castes and non-Yadav OBCs across north and central Bihar. Analysts say the move reflects an effort to consolidate traditional vote banks and project a fresh image ahead of the polls.

The absence of Muslim candidates marks a sharp turn from JD(U)’s earlier attempts to engage with minority communities. In the 2020 Assembly elections, the party had fielded several Muslim candidates, some of whom secured victories. The current exclusion has drawn criticism from opposition parties, including the RJD and Congress, who have accused JD(U) of sidelining minorities to align closely with BJP’s electoral approach.

Party insiders, however, describe the list as part of Nitish Kumar’s “governance and merit-first” approach. The leadership argues that performance and local strength guided candidate selection.

With the remaining seats yet to be announced, observers are watching whether the JD(U) will balance its ticket distribution in later rounds or continue this new trajectory. The candidate choices are expected to shape the tone of Bihar’s election campaign and redefine JD(U)’s relationship with its minority voter base.
