Patna: The Janata Dal (United) has released its second list of 44 candidates for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, featuring a mix of seasoned politicians and new entrants. The list marks a strategic shift as the party included four Muslim candidates, following criticism over their absence in the first list.
The Muslim candidates named are Janab Manzar Alam from Jokihat, Jama Khan from Chainpur, Saba Zafar from Aamour, and Shagufta Azim from Araria. Analysts see this as an effort by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to reinforce the JD(U)’s image of social inclusivity and retain minority support within the NDA alliance, particularly as the BJP’s list excluded Muslim representation.
Prominent leaders in the new lineup include Dhirendra Pratap Singh (Valmikinagar), Leshi Singh (Dhamdaha), Jayant Raj (Amarpur), Mahabali Singh (Karakat), and Sumit Kumar Singh (Chakai). The inclusion of young leaders like Shweta Gupta (Sheohar) and Samridh Verma (Sikta) reflects an attempt to blend experience with youthful appeal.
A party statement said the list was prepared with the goal of promoting inclusive development under Nitish Kumar’s leadership. With this release, the JD(U) has announced 101 candidates so far, signaling readiness for the upcoming elections.
Political observers believe the inclusion of Muslim candidates will strengthen JD(U)’s social coalition and counterbalance the NDA’s perceived tilt toward upper-caste and Hindu-majority constituencies. Bihar goes to polls in two phases on November 6 and 11, with counting on November 14.
