Ranchi: The Jharkhand high court raised strong concerns over the state government’s continued delay in releasing pension and gratuity for retired madrasa teachers. The court directed the principal secretary of the human resources development department and the director of the secondary education and literacy department to appear in person and explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated.
Justice Ananda Sen was hearing a contempt petition filed by Mohammed Ejabul Haque. He informed the court that in 2024, the high court ordered the state to ensure timely release of pension and gratuity to madrasa teachers retiring from government-recognised institutions. Haque said the government ignored this direction.
He pointed out that the state had issued a notification that denied pension and gratuity to madrasa teachers retiring after 2014. The high court set aside this notification on October 24 last year. The court clarified that the state must process and release dues for all eligible retired staff.
Haque said that despite clear judicial directions, no retired madrasa teacher has received pending payments. The court noted this continued inaction and issued show-cause notices to the two senior officials. They have been asked to explain why charges for contempt should not be framed.
The matter will be heard again after eight weeks.
