Pulitzer Prize winner and famous writer Jhumpa Lahiri has refused to accept the award from the Noguchi Museum in New York City while protesting against the suspension of three employees by the museum authority for wearing keffiyeh headscarf (a symbol of Palestinian solidarity).
The museum said, in a statement on Wednesday, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri has decided to withdraw her acceptance of the 2024 Isamu Noguchi Prize in response to our updated dress code policy. We respect her viewpoint and understand that this policy may or may not match everyone’s views. The New York Times first reported this news.
Lahiri received the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 for her book “Interpreter of Maladies”.
Lahiri is an American writer of Indian origin. She is famous for writing novels, essays and short stories. Lahiri’s biggest specialty is that her writing style is very simple. Keffiyeh is a symbol of Palestinian solidarity and following Israel’s attack on Gaza, protesters wearing the black and white keffiyeh headscarves around the world are demanding an end to the war.
