16 August 2024: In the wake of the devastating landslide in Wayanad, which affected over 200 families, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) Kerala has taken a leading role in relief efforts. Survivors are struggling to cope with the psychological impact of the disaster, prompting JIH Kerala to mobilize the Ethical Medical Forum and the Student Medical Group to provide psychological support and counseling.
The landslide, which hit the once-thriving hamlet of Mundakkai, has completely altered its landscape. Once known for its bustling cardamom farms, Mundakkai is now a scene of destruction, with its topography drastically changed.
Dr. Nishad VM, Project Director of Peoples Foundation, highlighted the need for urgent mitigation measures. He emphasized the importance of relocating residents from landslide-prone areas, restricting certain land uses, and installing early warning systems based on ground condition monitoring to prevent future disasters.
The Wayanad landslide underscores the fragile balance between human habitation and nature in this ecologically sensitive region. While the immediate response has been commendable, long-term efforts must focus on rehabilitation and implementing stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The dedication and resilience of JIH Kerala, along with Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) and the Peoples Foundation, offer hope, but the road to recovery for the affected communities remains long and challenging.
