New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind President Syed Sadatullah Hussaini has strongly condemned a reported US military attack on the commercial tanker Settebello off the coast of Oman that allegedly resulted in the deaths of three Indian mariners, calling for accountability and a strong diplomatic response from the Government of India.
In a statement here Friday, Hussaini expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Indian crew members and conveyed his condolences to their families. He also prayed for strength and patience for the bereaved relatives during their time of grief.
Referring to media reports that described the incident as the third attack in recent days on a vessel carrying Indian crew members, the JIH president said the targeting of a civilian commercial vessel and the deaths of Indian nationals could not be treated as collateral damage.
“Commercial shipping routes are vital international lifelines, and civilian maritime workers must never be endangered by military operations,” Hussaini said. He argued that such actions violate humanitarian principles, undermine international norms, and pose a threat to peace and stability in the region.
Describing the deaths of the Indian mariners as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” Hussaini called for a transparent investigation into the incident and demanded justice for the victims in accordance with international law.
The JIH chief also urged the Government of India to adopt what he described as a firm and unequivocal position on the matter. He called on New Delhi to lodge a strong diplomatic protest and seek accountability for the deaths of the Indian nationals.
In addition, he demanded adequate compensation for the families of the deceased, along with immediate financial assistance, employment support for dependents, and comprehensive relief and rehabilitation measures.
Addressing the broader regional situation, Hussaini reiterated Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s stand on what it termed military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran. He said such actions constituted a violation of international law and warned that continued military escalation could further destabilise the region, endanger civilian lives, disrupt global trade routes, and undermine international peace and economic stability.
The JIH president also called on the international community and the Indian government to intervene effectively to prevent further escalation and uphold the principles of international law and the protection of human life.
