New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami Hind President Syed Sadatullah Husaini has expressed concern over renewed United States military strikes against Iran, describing them as a setback to ongoing diplomatic efforts and a threat to peace and stability in West Asia.
In a statement to the media, Husaini said the ceasefire agreement and the start of negotiations had created hope that the region was moving away from conflict. He argued that the latest military action had weakened confidence in diplomacy and increased the risk of a wider regional confrontation.
The JIH president said the strikes appeared to disregard the spirit of the ceasefire and reduce the prospects for a peaceful settlement. He added that renewed unilateral military action at a time when diplomatic efforts had begun to make progress raised concerns regarding respect for international law and established norms for resolving disputes peacefully.
Husaini further stated that repeated attempts to pressure Iran through military force, sanctions and economic coercion had not produced a durable political settlement. According to him, such measures had contributed to greater instability and increased the possibility of a broader conflict.
He called on the international community to uphold international law, discourage unilateral use of force and support negotiations based on mutual respect and recognition of legitimate security concerns. Lasting peace in West Asia, he said, would emerge through dialogue, confidence building measures, justice and adherence to international law.
Highlighting the wider implications of renewed hostilities, Husaini warned that any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz would affect global oil prices, inflation, shipping costs and international trade. He noted that countries such as India remain vulnerable because of their dependence on imported energy.
The JIH president urged the Government of India to play a more proactive diplomatic role by supporting dialogue, encouraging restraint by all parties and contributing to a just and durable peace in the region.
