New Delhi, August 6: In light of the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) President Syed Sadatullah Husaini has called for urgent measures to restore peace and stability in the neighboring country. Husaini attributes the current turmoil to what he describes as the “dictatorial and draconian approach” of the Sheikh Hasina government.
In a media statement, Husaini emphasized the potential regional consequences of the unrest, asserting that the situation stems from the government’s handling of recent political developments. He noted that the January 2024 elections were marred by allegations of unfair practices, which led to a widespread boycott by the opposition and undermined the democratic process.
Husaini criticized the previous administration’s crackdown on dissent, citing the imprisonment of opposition leaders and violent repression of protests. He described the government’s response to student protests as excessively harsh, likening it to wartime measures.
The JIH President urged Bangladeshi officials to take decisive steps to restore order, including the formation of an interim government that commands broad trust and confidence. He stressed the need for justice for those affected by the unrest and accountability for those responsible for the violence.
Husaini also condemned the attacks on minority communities and called for immediate actions to ensure their safety. He acknowledged the efforts of civilians and civil society members in protecting religious sites and minority properties amid the turmoil.
The JIH leader emphasized the importance of initiating a democratic process promptly to facilitate free and fair elections, thereby establishing a representative government that truly reflects the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people.
