JMI Denies Bias Allegations, Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusivity

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has been accused of discrimination against non-Muslims and coercion for religious conversion, as per a fact-finding report by “Call for Justice,” an NGO. The report alleges systemic bias against non-Muslim students, faculty, and staff, with testimonies detailing derogatory behaviour, unequal treatment, and exclusion. Incidents include taunts faced by a non-Muslim assistant professor, unequal facilities for an SC faculty member, and harassment of tribal students, reportedly forcing some to leave. The report also highlights allegations of coercion for conversion, with claims of students being pressured to adopt Islam to secure academic benefits.

JMI categorically denied the allegations of religious coercion and reiterated its commitment to an inclusive campus. The university admitted past administrative shortcomings but emphasised steps taken under Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif’s leadership to ensure equity. Recent initiatives include appointing individuals from marginalised communities, including non-Muslim SC members, to key roles.

“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination, be it religious, caste-based, or gender-related,” Prof. Asif stated. The university also expressed its readiness to act if credible evidence of coercion emerges, urging complainants to come forward with concrete proof.

Muslim organisations have urged a fair investigation, cautioning against communalising an educational institution. They view the accusations as part of a broader narrative targeting minority institutions under the pretext of promoting “neutrality.” Observers stress the importance of addressing any genuine grievances while safeguarding the university’s legacy of providing quality education to all, irrespective of religion.
