Karnataka Assembly Rejects Centre’s Waqf Amendment Bill

– Mohammed Atharulla Shareef
BENGALURU: The Karnataka Assembly passed a resolution rejecting the Centre’s Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, calling it an attack on federalism and constitutional principles.
Law Minister H. K. Patil moved the resolution, criticizing the JPC for acting unilaterally and ignoring opposition voices. He argued that Waqf matters fall under the Concurrent List, making state consultation necessary.
The resolution condemned the Centre for disregarding objections from opposition MPs, the Karnataka Waqf Board, and other organizations. Patil said the JPC recommended changes, but the Centre pushed ahead without consensus.
He warned that the Bill would weaken state legislative powers and violate equity, equality, and parity. The resolution urged the Centre to withdraw it immediately.
BJP MLAs opposed the resolution, claiming Waqf properties encroach on temple and farmers’ lands. Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka dismissed it and led a BJP-JD(S) walkout.
Despite objections, the resolution passed, highlighting Karnataka’s defiance against the Centre on religious and legislative issues.
