Karnataka Government Considering New Law to Combat Hate Speech and Online Betting, Says CM Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru – Karnataka’s Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, announced on Saturday that the state government is “seriously considering” introducing a law aimed at curbing hate speech. He also revealed that discussions are ongoing about drafting legislation to tackle the growing issue of online betting, reported the SahilOnline.
The statement was made after a two-day review meeting with Deputy Commissioners (DCs) from all districts and CEOs of Zilla Panchayats.
Siddaramaiah emphasized that strict action must be taken against individuals engaging in hate speech. “If anyone indulges in hate speech, we will ensure legal action is taken. The government is seriously contemplating a law for the same,” he stated. “Merciless action should be taken against perpetrators, no matter how influential they are, and criminal cases should be filed against them.”
His comments come in the wake of several communal murders in Dakshina Kannada, underlining the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
Regarding online betting, the CM explained that the state’s Law Minister H. K. Patil and IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge are deliberating on the issue to assess if new legislation is necessary. “Based on their discussions, we will take the appropriate actions,” Siddaramaiah added.
He also noted that gambling, especially cricket betting and activities like matka, is severely affecting the youth. The government intends to curb this issue “ruthlessly” without succumbing to any external pressure.
Additionally, the CM outlined measures to address the exploitation of borrowers by microfinance institutions (MFIs), stressing that violators of the new law designed to protect borrowers will face stern penalties.
Siddaramaiah also highlighted that over 700 child marriages were recorded in the state last year. He underscored the importance of enforcing laws against child marriages and preventing child pregnancies. “Child marriages should be stopped at all costs. Officers at the grassroots level must ensure this, whether in urban or rural areas,” he said.
The CM further directed officials to focus on reducing the state’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR), underlining the importance of improved healthcare.
In his closing remarks, Siddaramaiah emphasized the crucial role of DCs, CEOs, and SPs in district administration. “These officers must work as a bridge between the government and the people, with coordination being key to district development,” he concluded.
