Mangaluru: A lecturer from a private college in Karnataka has been charged with hate speech after allegedly advising Hindus not to send their children to schools run by religious minorities. The incident occurred during an event in Kinnya, near Mangaluru, where the lecturer, Arun Ullal, addressed newlywed couples, reports The Indian Express.
Ullal, who is also a research scholar at Mangalore University, made controversial remarks suggesting that Hindus should avoid supporting educational institutions and marriage halls owned by minority communities. He claimed that a portion of the revenue generated by such institutions was being sent abroad, urging Hindus to exercise caution.
The Mangaluru police have booked Ullal under Sections 196 (promoting enmity between different religions) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Section 66C of the Information Technology Act. His statements were captured in a video that went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism.
Ullal, who previously taught at a minority-run institution, mentioned that he could have received a discount on his wedding had he chosen his former employer’s hall but opted for a Hindu-owned venue instead. He emphasized the importance of supporting Hindu-run institutions, alleging that many were struggling due to low enrollment, while those run by minorities were flourishing.
The lecturer’s comments have sparked debate, with many condemning the remarks as divisive and inflammatory. The investigation is ongoing.
