Bengaluru: Several Muslim organisations in Karnataka have announced a state-level convention on May 16 where they will release a report reviewing the Congress government’s three-year performance on issues linked to the Muslim community.
The report carries the title, “What Did the Congress Government Say? What Did It Do? What Next?” Organisers said no politicians will attend the Karnataka Muslim Convention. The report will later be submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, ministers and MLAs.
The decision emerged from a meeting attended by Muslim organisations, ulema groups, federations and members of the Karnataka Rajya Muslim Okkoota, KRMO, ad hoc committee. According to a release issued after the meeting, participants expressed dissatisfaction over the treatment of Muslims under the Congress government.
More than 75 delegates attended the gathering. The participants included ulemas, Jamaat leaders, lawyers, journalists, activists, retired officials and representatives from community organisations across the state.
Organisers said the report examined ten major promises made to Muslims by the Congress government and reviewed how many remained unfulfilled. The document also addressed allegations of discrimination in political representation and listed current demands from the community.
The discussions covered issues such as the hijab ban, reservation policies, hate speech, hate crimes, Waqf matters, the cow slaughter prohibition law, the anti-conversion law and educational scholarships.
Participants reportedly stated that if the Congress government continued its present approach towards Muslims, the community should keep its political options open.
The organisations also resolved to ensure participation from every district during the May 16 convention.
