Kashmir University Professor, Ghulam Jeelani Honoured with National Geoscience Award

SRINAGAR: Prof Ghulam Jeelani, Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Kashmir, has received the National Geoscience Award from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

The award, instituted by the Ministry of Mines, is one of the highest national honours in the field of geoscience. Prof Jeelani was recognised for his pioneering research in isotope hydrology and Himalayan environmental studies. His work has advanced scientific understanding of water resources, glaciers, and the impacts of climate change in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kashmir, Prof Nilofer Khan, congratulated him and said his contribution to isotope hydrology has strengthened scientific knowledge and provided tools to address urgent environmental concerns. She added that his achievement would encourage students and faculty members to engage in research with enhanced dedication.

The honour highlights the University of Kashmir’s growing role in national and international scientific research. It also reflects the institution’s active involvement in addressing environmental challenges and preparing future scholars for research that serves both regional and global needs.
