Kashmiri journalist Irfan Mehraj has been honored with the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Award for 2024, even as he remains in detention under severe charges. Mehraj, who secured the accolade in the Best Video Story category, was recognized for his impactful reporting on the heroin crisis in Kashmir.
His award-winning piece, “On Drugs – Kashmir’s Heroin Epidemic,” sheds light on the profound social and human rights ramifications of drug addiction in the region. The story, which combines powerful visuals with comprehensive reporting, underscores the devastating effects of the heroin epidemic on local communities.
On March 20, 2023, Mehraj was summoned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Srinagar for questioning. He was later detained under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. His arrest has drawn significant criticism as an attempt to suppress dissent and independent journalism in Kashmir.
Known for his role as the founding editor of Wande Magazine and editor of Two Circles, Mehraj has contributed to major news outlets, including Deutsche Welle and TRT World. He faces multiple serious charges, including sedition and alleged involvement in “terror” activities.
