Kashmiris have once again showcased their renowned hospitality by opening their homes and mosques to stranded tourists affected by heavy snowfall in the valley. The season’s first snowfall in Srinagar and other plains of Kashmir disrupted flight and railway operations on Friday, while the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was shut down due to adverse weather conditions.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, praised the gesture, calling it an act of warmth and humanity. Videos circulating on social media show locals serving food to stranded tourists and offering them shelter in homes and mosques. Some passengers were even seen playing cricket inside the Qazigund-Banihal Navyug Tunnel, showcasing a spirit of resilience despite the challenges.
The snowfall, which ranged from moderate in central Kashmir to heavy and very heavy in southern plains, left approximately 2,000 vehicles stuck between Qazigund and the tunnel. Local politicians and activists shared videos highlighting the community’s compassion during the crisis.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah provided updates, stating, “Snow clearance has been carried out, but the road remains icy. Heavy vehicles are being allowed to move, and efforts are ongoing to clear the remaining stranded vehicles.”
Kashmir’s enduring spirit of hospitality and unity continues to shine, even amidst challenging circumstances.
