The Grand Mufti of India, Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, has voiced concerns over a co-educational fitness programme in Kerala, stating it conflicts with Islamic values. Addressing a gathering in Malappuram, the leader, who also serves as the General Secretary of All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, criticised the Multi Exercise Combination – 7 (MEC-7) programme, which has gained traction in northern Kerala, reports The Hindustan Times.
He argued that the programme disregards Islamic principles by promoting the mingling of men and women and claimed that women’s participation, particularly involving activities that expose their bodies, is against Islamic teachings. He further suggested that such practices could lead to societal issues.
The MEC-7 programme incorporates diverse fitness activities and has garnered attention but also faced backlash. Some political figures, including leaders from the BJP and CPM, have accused Muslim fundamentalists of using the programme for ideological purposes. However, programme organisers have firmly denied these allegations.
Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad is known for his outspoken views. In the past, he described gender equality as un-Islamic, asserting that women’s primary role lies in childbearing. His latest remarks have reignited debates about gender roles, religious practices, and cultural dynamics in Kerala.
