Kerala Police Issue Notice Against Airport Blockade Over Waqf Act, Warn of Vehicle Seizure

KOZHIKODE – The Kerala Police have issued a strict warning against the planned protest by the Solidarity Youth Movement and the Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) at Kozhikode International Airport, opposing the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, reported the Maktoob Media.
The protest, scheduled for today, is part of a larger demand for the repeal of the Act, which is set to come into effect on Tuesday. Both Solidarity and SIO are affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Kerala.
In a notice issued under Section 39(2)(d) of the Kerala Police Act, authorities stated that the airport blockade is being organized without prior permission and could obstruct public movement, disrupt airport operations, and trigger potential law-and-order concerns.
The police warned that any vehicles used to transport protesters will be seized, and legal action under the Motor Vehicles Act will be taken against the owners. “You are hereby informed of this decision,” the notice emphasized, reiterating the seriousness of the consequences.
Despite this warning, leaders from both SIO and Solidarity expressed their intent to proceed with the protest. Taking to social media, they condemned the police notice, calling it undemocratic and hypocritical.
SIO state president Adv. Abdul Wahid accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of employing oppressive tactics under the guise of maintaining law and order. “While the government claims to oppose the Waqf Act, it is acting just like the BJP-ruled states,” he said.
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Kerala President P. Mujeeburahman also criticized the move, stating, “If Kerala is emulating the Delhi and UP police in persecuting minorities, then what is the purpose of having a Left government? The state must withdraw from this fascist path.”
The protest is part of growing nationwide dissent against the Waqf Amendment Act, with minority organizations expressing fears over state interference in religious endowments.
