New Delhi: Amid rising hate campaigns against Muslims and increasing restrictions on the call to prayer (Azaan), acts of communal harmony continue to shine. In a remarkable display of unity, a temple in Kerala hosted an Iftar for the Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan, reinforcing the spirit of religious coexistence.
According to reports, a temple in Kasaragod organized an Iftar gathering, sending a strong message of solidarity. While mosques typically host Iftar, this event within the temple premises surprised many. As part of the Perumkaliyattam festival, the temple committee prepared food for devotees and extended a warm invitation to their Muslim brethren to break their fast together.
As the sun set, fasting individuals arrived at the temple, where they were warmly welcomed by the authorities. The atmosphere turned deeply moving when the Azaan resonated within the temple, prompting everyone to pause in respectful silence. Munawwar Ali Shahab, a local resident, shared that representatives from 13 mosques were invited, and the experience was profoundly touching. Describing the event on social media, he wrote, “This was truly a beautiful gathering.”
Similar Iftar events were held in Nileshwaram, Palikkara, and Thrikaripur, strengthening interfaith relations. The temple committee personally reached out to mosque representatives and distributed food, deepening community ties. Sabir Cherumal, a local resident, highlighted that this unity extends beyond Ramadan, recalling how mosques provided shelter during floods. “We all treat each other like family,” he said.
The Iftar event also saw participation from political figures, including Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan. Just days earlier, the Brechery Mosque Committee had welcomed the Kalari Mandia Kluvara procession, while the Almara Mosque displayed banners in support of the Perumkaliyattam festival. These instances reflect the enduring interfaith harmony in the region, offering a powerful lesson in unity amid growing polarization.
