Kerala’s Solidarity with Palestine with ‘Lights Out’ Campaign

4 June 2024: The state of Kerala ran the “Lights Out: Candles for Palestine” campaign to show solidarity with the Palestinian people amid ongoing conflict. The campaign aimed to support the Palestinian cause, raise awareness about their hardships, highlight the humanitarian crisis, and reflect Kerala’s commitment to global human rights.

Palestine Solidarity Forum- Kerala, organized the campaign on Sunday. Residents were encouraged to switch off their lights at 8 pm, symbolizing unity. People gathered in public spaces and their homes to light candles, creating a poignant visual representation of support. Events were held in major cities and towns, featuring speeches by activists, cultural performances, and displays of Palestinian flags and symbols. A robust social media campaign using hashtags like #CandlesForPalestine amplified the reach and engagement, encouraging global participation.

The response from the public in Kerala was overwhelmingly positive. Thousands of people across the state participated, and the Malayali community around the globe turned off their lights and lit candles. Various community groups, educational institutions, and local businesses participated, organizing their events and gatherings.

One of the participants from the campaign, Najma Nazeer, a professor at a local college, said, “In a gesture of solidarity and hope, my family and I lit out candles for Palestine. We stand united with our Palestinian brothers and sisters, illuminating their plight and demanding justice. Let our collective light pierce the darkness and draw the world’s unwavering gaze toward Rafah.”

While Kerala’s “Lights Out: Candles for Palestine” campaign is a significant example of how local initiatives can contribute to global humanitarian causes, a small group of peaceful protestors in Karnataka were manhandled and arrested. New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar also witnessed a protest and march by local student unions in solidarity with the Palestinian citizens.
