Kolkata Stands Firm for Palestine Amid Heavy Rains

27 July 2024: In a powerful display of solidarity, the streets of Kolkata filled with determined protesters on Friday, despite heavy rains, as they rallied against what they termed as the “genocide” being committed by Israel in Palestine. The demonstration, organized under the umbrella group “Indians For Palestine,” coincided with widespread global condemnation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s controversial address to the US Congress.

Participants, including children, women, and various activists, marched from Subodh Mallick Square to Esplanade, holding umbrellas and banners emblazoned with slogans like “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free” and “Free, Free, Free Palestine.” The protestors called on the Indian government to cease its support and arms supply to Israel, emphasizing their stance against the ongoing conflict.

Several organizations joined the march, including the Hawker Sangram Committee, AISA, AIPWA, SIO, Women’s India Movement, RYA, Bandi Mukti Committee, Jana Andolon, Pashchimbanga Ganasanskriti Parishad, AIPF, Bangla Banchao Desh Banchao Mancha, and the 24×7 Boycott Group, among others.

Dr. Sarfaraz Adil, a leading figure in the 24×7 Boycott movement, addressed the resilient gathering, highlighting the significance of their participation despite the adverse weather. “This day will be remembered for a long time,” he said. “Your presence here, braving the rain, sends a strong message of our collective stand for humanity.”

Nousheen Baba Khan, a social activist, questioned the role of international organizations in addressing the plight of Palestinians. “Where is the UN when more than 35,000 children in Gaza have missing limbs and suffer from extreme psychological trauma?” she asked, criticizing the global body for its inaction.

The rally took place a day after Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress, which received a standing ovation. This reception was met with widespread disapproval, including from Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who condemned Netanyahu’s remarks and the support he received.

Gandhi took to social media to criticize the address, stating that Netanyahu’s portrayal of the conflict as a war between a civilized and barbaric nation was hypocritical. “It is he and his government who are barbaric,” she asserted.

The protest in Kolkata underscores the growing discontent among Indian citizens regarding the country’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict and highlights the enduring spirit of solidarity among diverse communities in advocating for global justice.
