Supreme Court to Review Plea on Representation in Krishna Janmabhoomi Shahi Idgah Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear a plea on December 1 filed by a Hindu litigant in the Krishna Janmabhoomi Shahi Idgah dispute. The plea challenges an Allahabad High Court order that recognised another Hindu party as the representative of all devotees of Lord Krishna. The development comes as multiple suits over the Mathura site move through the courts and as similar disputes continue to shape local tensions.

A bench of Justices Sanjay Kumar and Alok Aradhe said the matter needs detailed arguments. Senior advocate Shyam Divan, representing the aggrieved Hindu party, said his client filed the first suit in the case. He said the High Court had treated their suit as the lead case after all matters were transferred from the Mathura court. He argued that it was improper for the High Court to elevate another party as the representative of all devotees. He said the order went beyond the prayer made in that party’s application.

The mosque committee has already approached the Supreme Court against the High Court’s 2023 decision to transfer all suits to itself. Over 20 civil suits related to the dispute are before the High Court.

The dispute centres on the Shahi Idgah mosque. The Hindu side claims the mosque stands on the site of a demolished temple said to mark the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Muslim groups maintain that the mosque is a protected religious space and warn that these legal battles deepen mistrust.

The upcoming hearing will influence how the High Court manages the suits and which parties hold representative status as the cases progress.
