Lakshadweep Emerges as Preferred Destination for Israeli Tourists Following Maldives Ban

4 June 2024: In the wake of the Maldives’ recent decision to bar entry to Israeli passport holders, Lakshadweep has gained prominence as a top destination for Israeli tourists. The Israeli embassy in India has been actively promoting several beautiful Indian beaches where Israeli tourists are warmly welcomed, emphasizing the unparalleled hospitality they can expect.

The Maldives’ move came as a reaction to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, prompting the Israeli embassy to highlight alternative destinations within India, including Goa, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Kerala. The embassy’s tweet recommended these locations based on experiences shared by their diplomats.

This shift in tourism dynamics has also been influenced by Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep earlier this year, which spurred a surge of interest among Indian travelers. EaseMyTrip, a popular Indian travel agency, has noted a significant decline in bookings for the Maldives, further propelling interest in domestic island destinations. The agency’s CEO, Nishant Pitti, confirmed that they had suspended Maldives bookings from January 8, resuming only briefly in May before halting again.

The Maldives government has advised Israeli citizens already in the country to consider leaving, citing difficulties in providing assistance if needed. This policy change has also drawn negative attention to the Maldives’ tourism sector, which has been facing criticism and declining interest from Indian tourists.

With stunning beaches and a welcoming environment, Lakshadweep and other Indian coastal destinations are poised to benefit from this shift, offering an attractive alternative for travelers from Israel and beyond.
