Giving political space to minorities is not just a matter of fairness or justice; it is essential for the functioning and stability of democratic societies. By ensuring that minorities also have the opportunity to participate in the political process, democracies can uphold their core principles of equality, justice, and representation.
One way to find this out is by checking the number of Muslim candidates fielded by mainstream political parties. Both the NDA and INDIA bloc have given tickets to Muslims for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Some more names will also be announced as the process of elections and filing nominations is ongoing.
List of Muslim candidates fielded by NDA are as follows:
- Dhubri in Assam: Zabed Islam (AGP)
- Kishanganj in Bihar: Mujahid Alam, JD(U)
- Lakshadweep: TP Yousuf (NCP)
- Malappuram in Kerala: Dr Abdul Salam (BJP)
In the list of candidates fielded by INDIA bloc, we find Congress has given 16 tickets, CPM 6 tickets, IUML 2 tickets, JKNC 3 tickets, RJD 2 tickets, SP 4 tickets and NCP (Sharad Pawar) one ticket – to Muslims.
