Pune: A minor fire incident caused a stir on board a Daund-Pune shuttle train near Yevat in Pune district early Monday morning when a lit bidi thrown into a toilet dustbin ignited trash and led to smoke, causing panic among the few passengers present in the coach, reported the Times of India.
According to railway officials, the incident occurred around 8:00 am when papers and garbage in the lavatory bin caught fire due to the still-burning bidi. The train, a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU), was mid-route when smoke started billowing from the toilet area.
Railway staff acted swiftly to contain the blaze and prevent further damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Authorities have detained a 55-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh in connection with the incident. A preliminary inquiry is underway to determine further action.
The Daund Railway Police stated, “Prompt action by the crew and passengers prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating.”
This incident once again underscores the need for public awareness and caution while traveling, especially regarding fire safety inside trains.
