Low Representation of Muslims in State Jobs in Kerala

4 July 2024: As per an official data released by the Kerala Government, with a population of 26.5% only 13.51% of Muslims are in the state government jobs. Whereas the unreserved forward category, which includes Christians and ‘upper caste’ Hindus, constitute more than 43% of the state government employees.

In response to a question by Indian Union Muslim League member P Ubaidulla, the statistics provided by the state government are here.

The data shows that out of 5.45 lakh permanent employees in the state government services Muslims are 73,774 (13.51%) even though they constitute 26.5% of the Kerala population as per the 2011 census. And there are about 1.08 lakhs (19.8%) employees from the ‘Suvarna Hindus’, predominantly Nairs 7,112 Brahmins and Ambalavasi (those who are into the temple services) 2765 in the government jobs; whose population is 14%.

Likewise, the Hindu-Ezhava community which comes under Other Backward category with a population of 23% has 1,15,075 employees constituting 21.09%.

The count of Christians is 96,265 i.e. 17.63% of the state staff with a population percentage of 18.3.

The data is compiled by the Kerala State Commission for Backward Classes and was presented by K Radhakrishnan, former minister for Backward Classes Welfare, recently elected to the Lok Sabha.
