Newark, New Jersey: Lubna Qazi Chowdhry has taken office as an Administrative Law Judge in New Jersey, becoming the first Muslim woman to serve in this role in the state. Her appointment marks a new chapter for representation in the state judiciary.
Governor Philip D. Murphy nominated Qazi Chowdhry on January 6, 2026. The New Jersey State Senate confirmed her nomination. She took oath on January 22, 2026. New Jersey Supreme Court Associate Justice Rachel Wainer Apter administered the oath in Newark. Qazi Chowdhry has since begun hearing cases.
Originally from Raigad district in Maharashtra, India, Qazi Chowdhry graduated from Western State College of Law in 2005. She built her career in administrative law. As an Administrative Law Judge, she presides over hearings involving state agencies. These include disputes over regulations, public benefits, licenses, and other administrative matters.
During the oath ceremony, she placed her hand on the Holy Quran and pledged to uphold the Constitution. The gesture reflected her faith and her commitment to impartial justice within the legal framework of the United States.
