‘Made-in-India’ Missile Remains Found in Gaza: Let the Govt. Investigate and Address the Issue

– Adv. Shahid Usman Ali

Recent footage, which went viral on 06.06.2024, has revealed that weapons manufactured in India have been found in Gaza, raising grave concerns about the role of the world’s largest democracy in the ongoing conflict and alleged acts of genocide in the region. This revelation demands immediate attention and action from both the Indian government and its people.

The conflict in Gaza has been marked by extreme violence, human rights abuses, and widespread suffering of innocent civilians. For decades, the Palestinian people have endured a relentless blockade, severe restrictions on their movements, and periodic escalations of violence that have resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread destruction. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is dire, with the majority of the population lacking access to necessities such as clean water, medical care, and adequate shelter.

In this context, the discovery of India-made weapons in Gaza is profoundly a distressing impression. It raises several critical questions about India’s role in the global arms trade and its implications for human rights and international peace. India, a nation that prides itself on its democratic values and commitment to peace, must not be complicit in the perpetuation of violence and suffering in Gaza.

India, as a democratic nation with a rich history of non-violent struggle for independence, has a moral and ethical responsibility to ensure that its actions and policies do not contribute to human suffering or support oppressive regimes. The principles of Mahatma Gandhi, who advocated for peace, non-violence, and justice, should guide India’s stance on international conflicts and its participation in the global arms trade.

The presence of India-made weapons in Gaza suggests a failure to uphold these principles. The Indian government must take immediate steps to investigate how these weapons ended up in the hands of those perpetrating violence in Gaza. Moreover, it must ensure stringent controls and oversight mechanisms to prevent the sale or transfer of arms to regions where they could be used to commit atrocities or violate human rights.

The Indian government must launch a thorough and transparent investigation into the supply chain of these weapons. It should hold those responsible for their sale or transfer to conflict zones accountable. This includes not only the manufacturers but also intermediaries and government officials who might have facilitated these transactions. India needs to implement and enforce stricter export controls to ensure that its weapons do not end up in the hands of parties involved in human rights abuses. This includes adopting rigorous end-use monitoring mechanisms and working closely with international bodies to track and regulate arms transfers. India should reaffirm its commitment to international peace and security by actively participating in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Gaza conflict.

The Indian people, as citizens of a democratic nation, have a crucial role to play in holding their government accountable. Civil society organizations, human rights groups, and the media must work together to raise awareness about the implications of India’s arms trade policies and the need for ethical and responsible practices. India should increase its humanitarian assistance to Gaza, providing much-needed aid to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population. This can include medical supplies, food, and support for rebuilding infrastructure destroyed in the conflict.

The Indian people need to raise their voices against any actions that contribute to violence and human suffering. Public opinion can be a powerful force in shaping government policies and ensuring that they align with the country’s ethical and democratic values. By speaking out, participating in peaceful protests, and engaging in dialogue with policymakers, Indian citizens can help steer their nation towards a path of peace, justice, and respect for human rights.

The revelation that India-made weapons have been found in Gaza is a wake-up call for India. It is a reminder that the choices and actions of a nation, even one committed to democratic ideals, can have far-reaching consequences on the global stage. As the largest democracy in the world, India must lead by example, demonstrating a commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human rights.

We call upon the Indian government to take immediate and decisive action to investigate and address this issue, to implement stronger controls on arms exports, and to support international efforts for peace in Gaza. We urge the Indian people to use their voices and their democratic rights to demand accountability and ethical governance.

Let us strive for a world where weapons of war are replaced with tools of peace, and where the suffering of innocents is met with compassion and aid, not with indifference or complicity. Together, we can work towards a future where every nation upholds the principles of human dignity and justice, and where the horrors of conflict and genocide are consigned to the pages of history.
