New Delhi: A senior BJP minister from Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Shah, has ignited widespread outrage following a deeply controversial statement targeting Colonel Sophia Qureshi, a decorated army officer who recently led Operation Sindoor against terrorists in Pahalgam. Shah’s remarks, perceived as communal and disrespectful, prompted sharp criticism from opposition leaders and citizens alike, eventually forcing him to issue a public apology, reported the Dawat News.
The incident unfolded after Operation Sindoor, an Indian Army counter-terror mission that received praise from across the nation for its success and professionalism. Colonel Sophia Qureshi, who played a key role in the operation, was widely appreciated during a press conference for representing the unity of Indians across faiths in defending the country. Her presence sent a strong message of national integration, with both Hindus and Muslims saluting her bravery.
However, during a speech in Raikunda village in the Manpur region of Indore district, Minister Vijay Shah made remarks that many interpreted as indirectly referring to Colonel Qureshi. Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, Shah said, “Those who undressed and killed our daughters, we sent their own sister back to them through our aircraft and showed them the consequences.” He added that Modi sent a woman from their own community to “strip them metaphorically” in revenge for the atrocities they committed.
These statements were widely condemned, especially as they appeared to undermine and insult the integrity and sacrifice of Colonel Sophia. The Congress Party demanded Shah’s immediate resignation. Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari stated, “At a time when the whole nation is united in the fight against terrorism, such hateful remarks from a senior BJP leader are shameful. When the Prime Minister salutes the army, how can a minister from his own party call an officer a terrorist’s sister?”
Facing mounting backlash from across political and social spectrums, Shah later apologized, stating, “Even in my dreams, I cannot think ill of Colonel Sophia or dishonor the army. She rose above caste and religion to serve the nation, and I salute her courage and service.”
The incident has reignited debates about communal rhetoric, political responsibility, and the need to respect armed forces personnel regardless of their background.
