Shajapur: Tension flared in Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district after villagers attacked a Muslim youth accused of eloping with a Hindu girl. The incident took place near Bercha police station area, where locals reportedly beat up the youth, identified as Sharif from Dendla village, and set his motorcycle ablaze.
Police arrived at the spot and shifted the injured youth to Shajapur district hospital. After receiving first aid, he was referred to Indore for further treatment. The Hindu girl remains missing, and police say search operations are ongoing.
According to officials, Sharif has been accused by the girl’s family of abducting her from the Maxi police station area. The family lodged a complaint at the Superintendent of Police’s office earlier this week, alleging police inaction. Hindu organisations joined the protest, accusing the police of negligence and demanding strict action.
The Hindu Jagran Manch warned of launching an agitation if the girl was not traced quickly. Leaders accused police of ignoring their complaint despite “clear evidence” and described the incident as part of what they called “love jihad.”
Following the assault, community leaders and local groups demanded demolition of Sharif’s house using bulldozers, a tactic increasingly seen in such disputes in Madhya Pradesh. District authorities, however, have not confirmed any such step.
Police officials have appealed for calm and said investigations are underway to trace the missing girl and identify those involved in the assault and arson. The situation remains tense in the area.
