Sena Backs Anti-Conversion Bill, Exposes Divisions Within Opposition Alliance

New Delhi: The decision of Shiv Sena (UBT) to support the Maharashtra Freedom of Religion Bill, 2026 has highlighted clear divisions within the Opposition alliance in the state. While its allies Indian National Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) opposed the Bill, the Sena chose a different path.

The party stated that its position aligns with its long-held stand against forced or fraudulent religious conversions. Leaders stressed that freedom of religion must remain intact, while coercion or inducement should face strict action. The Bill allows police to act on suspected unlawful conversions even without a formal complaint. It also expands liability to include those involved in documentation linked to such conversions.

Senior leader Uddhav Thackeray supported the legislation with caution. He said religious freedom must be protected for all, while opposing exploitation of vulnerable individuals. Party representatives also raised concerns in the legislature. They questioned whether the law might be misused and asked the government to present data on conversion trends and causes.

Opposition leaders from Congress and NCP raised concerns over privacy, personal liberty, and its impact on minority communities. They argued that the Bill could affect interfaith relationships and requires deeper scrutiny.

The disagreement reflects ongoing strain within the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. Recent elections and coordination issues have already exposed gaps between partners. Despite this, the alliance continues due to shared political goals.

The Bill has now passed both Houses, with Sena support playing a key role in its approval.
