Pune: Ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections, Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has unveiled a list of 27 star campaigners, which includes four prominent Muslim leaders, signalling a strategic outreach to the state’s minority communities. Among those named are Hasan Mushrif, a current cabinet minister, Idris Nayakwadi, Jalaluddin Syed, and Wasim Burhan, each recognised for their active roles in the party and state politics, reports the Times of India.
Hasan Mushrif, representing the Kagal assembly constituency, has long established himself as a leader who speaks for all communities, beyond religious affiliations. Currently serving as the Minister of Medical Education and Special Assistance, Mushrif has earned respect across political circles through his work and outreach efforts.
Wasim Burhan, a member of Maharashtra’s Minority Commission, expressed his gratitude on social media after his selection, noting his commitment to promoting NCP’s vision and fostering progress under Ajit Pawar’s leadership.
“My heartfelt gratitude to respected Dada and Tatkare Sahab for appointing me as a star campaigner. I am ready to convey the NCP’s goals and dedication to every voter in Maharashtra,” Burhan shared.
Idris Nayakwadi, newly appointed as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), also serves as the president of NCP’s Minority Department. His recent nomination to the Legislative Council is seen as an effort by the NCP to strengthen support from the Muslim community.
Political analyst Pradeep Deshmukh highlights that this approach, especially ahead of the elections, aims to gain the backing of minority voters.
“A charismatic communicator like Naikwadi helps convey party ideals effectively. His nomination indicates Pawar’s strategy to secure Muslim support, a key factor in both the Lok Sabha and state assembly polls,” Deshmukh explained.
The influence of the Muslim community, proven in past elections, is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming polls, with all parties making efforts to connect with this demographic. However, notable NCP leader Nawab Malik was not listed among the campaigners, despite his association with the Ajit Pawar faction after a medical bail. Malik is anticipated to contest from Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar, while his daughter Sana Malik is expected to represent Anushakti Nagar.
Political analysts suggest that these strategic nominations and inclusions indicate the party’s emphasis on inclusivity and community representation, as they work to strengthen their voter base across Maharashtra.
