Adiba Anam Becomes Maharashtra’s First Muslim Woman IAS Officer

Mumbai: Adiba Anam from Yavatmal district has become the first Muslim woman from Maharashtra to join the Indian Administrative Service. She secured an All India Rank of 142 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024. Her journey has drawn attention across the country because she grew up in a low income household and worked through several challenges to reach this point.

Adiba’s father works as an auto rickshaw driver. The family has faced financial stress for years. Her parents ensured her education continued without interruption. Adiba said her father inspired her because he worked every day with discipline. She studied in Yavatmal and completed a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from a local college in Pune.

She set her goal early and decided to appear for the UPSC examination during her graduation. The process was difficult. She did not clear the exam in her first two attempts. She said she often felt unsure about continuing. Her family encouraged her to stay focused. In her third attempt she secured rank 142 and entered the IAS. Her selection has been described as a milestone for the state.

Adiba said she had developed an interest in public service during her childhood. She often visited an NGO run by her uncle and observed how officers worked on issues related to education and health. She said this exposure shaped her ambition and helped her understand how administration influences local communities. She urged girls from all backgrounds to pursue their goals with discipline.
