Maharashtra: Muslim Scrap Dealer’s Shop Demolished After Alleged ‘Pro-Pakistan’ Slogans During Cricket Match

Malvan, Maharashtra – The Malvan Municipal Council in Maharashtra demolished a scrap shop owned by a Muslim family after allegations surfaced that their 15-year-old son shouted “Pakistan Zindabad” during the India-Pakistan Champions Trophy match on February 24. The incident led to the arrest of the boy and his parents, sparking concerns over swift punitive actions based on unverified claims.

The demolition came in response to protests by local Hindutva groups demanding strict action. Shiv Sena MLA Nilesh Rane shared visuals of the demolition on social media, commending the administration for acting promptly. “A Muslim migrant scrap dealer raised anti-India slogans after the India-Pakistan match. As a response, we ensured that his illegal shop was demolished,” Rane posted on X .

Authorities justified the demolition by citing encroachment laws, though critics argue it was a retaliatory action fueled by communal tensions. The rapid response has raised questions about due process, selective law enforcement, and the broader implications of such actions on minority communities.

Meanwhile, videos have surfaced showing Pakistani fans in Islamabad celebrating Virat Kohli’s century during the same match, leading to online debates about contrasting reactions in India and Pakistan. Many social media users pointed out the disparity, questioning whether an Indian could celebrate a Pakistani cricketer’s performance without facing severe repercussions.

The incident has intensified discussions on nationalism, freedom of expression, and the treatment of individuals based on perceived patriotism. Critics highlight that similar incidents in the past have led to sedition charges and prolonged persecution of individuals, often targeting minority communities.

The arrests and demolition continue to spark controversy, with rights groups calling for a fair investigation and urging authorities to prevent communal targeting under the guise of legal enforcement.
